Mandela dies…South Africa fries…apparently.

Mandela2

So it being Father’s Day today, I guess it’s only fitting that I start by wishing Comrade Nelson Mandela, the father of the nation and his kids, a very happy father’s day. This year, Father’s Day in South Africa falls on a Public Holiday. Yep, today is Youth Day, a day when South Africans commemorate the Soweto Uprising that began on 16th June 1976.
The roots of the Soweto Uprising lay in a 1974 official order which made Afrikaans compulsory in schools and the use of indigenous languages prohibited. Because Afrikaans was largely seen as the “language of the oppressor”, this order resulted in growing resentment in both teachers and students. As such, on 16th June 1976, thousands of black students went on a protest rally from their schools to Orlando Stadium.

As was becoming the horrific norm in apartheid South Africa, what was supposed to be a peaceful protest resulted in the deaths of innocent children at the hands of a heavily armed police force. There is no doubt that the Soweto Uprising played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the release of Nelson Mandela and the end of the apartheid regime in South Africa, politically anyway.

Today Mandela is almost 95 years old and is currently in a Pretoria hospital suffering from a recurring lung infection that came as a result of the tuberculosis he contracted during the 27 year stint he endured on Robben Island. Taking into account his age, illness, and the many trying times he’s been through, it’s natural for people to fear that the end is nigh for the man that become the iconic face of South Africa’s struggle against apartheid.

So what happens when Nelson Mandela finally rests? Well, type in “white g” and before you finish, Google will have suggested “white genocide in South Africa”. Under the results you’ll find such genius headings as “Blacks will massacre whites after Mandela’s death”, “South Africans fear Mandela’s death” and “White genocide after Mandela’s death in SA”.

Within these articles, the basic story is this:

White people in South Africa believe black people will no longer hold back after Mandela dies. They believe blacks will wield knives, guns, sjamboks, and any other weapons, and take what they believe is owed to them. This, according to these sites, shall be known as “Operation White Clean-up”. Catchy title hey? Anyway, it will be chaos, they say, and the country will burn. BURN I TELL YOU!

Yes people, apparently black South Africans have, since 1994, been sat twiddling their thumbs, sharpening their machetes, waiting patiently for Mandela to die. And as soon as he does, black folks are going to morph, incredible hulk style, into mean, green, white-people-killing machines.

Call me anserous, but I think it’s quite insulting to the intelligence of black people to suggest they’ll just start swinging on monkey bars and slaughtering anyone who possesses reduced amounts of melanin. Any why? Because a former president will have passed away? I know we were dumb enough to have our land and wealth stolen from right under our noses but to suggest we’ll all turn into serial killers soon after Mandela’s doctor calls time of death sounds somewhat farfetched.

Maybe the white folks writing this malarkey on these fear mongering websites need to rather put their efforts into spreading the word about the need to build a more equal and economically sustainable South Africa for all its citizens regardless of race. And while they are at it, drop the superiority complex that plagues many white South Africans. Because all this complex does is create fodder for fear-inducing, anti-democracy, privilege-demanding right wing extremists.

Okay, fine, let me stop being a logical and rational party pooper and instead humour the “Operation White Clean-up” conspiracy theorists among us. Let’s see…how can I indulge said folks? Oh yes, how about this: “To my white associates…beware, my machete cometh! MUHAHAHAHA!”

Better?

*just scribbling my machete thoughts*

It is precisely statements like this that lends credence to the conspiracy theories.

Let’s get one thing straight: No one stole anything from you!
Being black doesn’t mean you deserve something for nothing. Get the chip off your shoulder.
What was this wealth that was stolen? When whites arrived in South Africa what wealth was there to steal? Stones, grass, and cow shit? We mined gold, diamonds, coal, copper, etc. We built the infrastructure, the economy, the whole country. You built nothing. You came from central Africa, slaughtered the Khoi, occupied their land and you feel justified in crying now about whites having land and/or wealth? Apply your mind you cretin.
I was born in the RSA, i am African, try to take something i worked for by force. You will come off second best.

Now now, no need to get your knickers in a knot.

You were born in SA? Yeay for you. You’re an African? Well…there’s a reason why you’ve never come across any forms or classification documentation that lists “white african” as an option. It’s coz it’s not.

As for your “what was this wealth that was stolen?” argument, well, Africans (the black ones I mean) were living on, farming, mining, and building on the land long before any boats arrived on these shores. And when chiefs like Lobengula were duped into taking novelty items like mirrors in exchange for that land, that was theft. Feel free to tell yourself otherwise, but it was theft.

That said, I encourage my readers to have opinions. Warped as they may be, if they make sense to you, they are welcome. So, thanks for your comments white african!

So, what you’re saying is that it doesn’t matter where you were born but your ancestry is what counts? In that case everyone is African!!!

“living on, farming, mining, and building on the land long before any boats arrived on these shores”

Living on – Debatable (bring me some written history, oh wait you dont have any)
Farming – Subsistence farming *slow clap*
        Mining – Scratching soil
        Building – Mud and sticks

“Feel free to tell yourself otherwise, but it was theft”

        theft
        /THeft/Noun
The action or crime of stealing: “he was convicted of theft”; “the latest theft happened at a garage”.

stealing present participle of steal (Verb)
        Verb
1.Take (another person’s property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it: “thieves stole her bicycle”.

No theft, nothing was stolen. If you’re dumb enough to TRADE land for a mirror, how is that my fault?

My thoughts aren’t warped, you just have an entitlement mentality.
Regardless, as i pointed out, it is a mindset like yours that lends credence to the far right’s ideals… That’s all.

So lets deal with the reality, instead of emotions which is all you seem to go on, almost every group of people in the history of the world has been oppressed or had atrocities committed against them by another group of people. Now, why is it that blacks want a handout and must be treated with baby gloves the world over? Answer me that?

If anything it proves to me that you are a racist. You believe that the only way a black man will ever amount to anything is if it is given to him, like he doesnt have the capacity to learn and work. And that, my friend, is the saddest thing that apartheid ever did to you.

Yho. Calm down fella. No one is talking about handouts…I’m talking about equal opportunities. Tomato, tomatoe I guess?

Why do white people, especially in South Africa, get so defensive when you talk about redressing past injustices? You talk about handouts…apartheid was nothing but handouts to white people. The privileges you continue to enjoy today as a white South African are largely due to White Economic Empowerment…aka apartheid.

You want to accuse me of being a racist simply for wanting equality for black people, then by all means go ahead. But, regardless of what you may tell yourself, black people in South Africa don’t live in poverty simply because they are lazy. And likewise, white people in South Africa don’t live in luxury simply because they are hard working.

The world over, black people have never fought for superiority, only equality. From Thurgood Marshall and the Little Rock Nine in the US, to Julius Nyerere in Tanzania and Kimathi Waciuri in Kenya, all the way to Joshua Nkomo in Zimbabwe and Solomon Mahlangu right here in SA. All they wanted was equality.

Equality is not yet a reality in South Africa today and until that happens, the so-called rainbow nation will remain a mere illusion…and more realistically, a time bomb.

All that said, I can see this is an issue that you & I would debate till way after last orders. So feel free to send me your final word on the matter and we can draw a neat line under it.

Talk about stereotyping and generalizing… You have no idea about the lives of many white people. The only reason why poverty of black people is so obvious is because the black population is so vast. I have not experienced the handouts given by the white apartheid government to the white people as you suggest. And your generalization that all white people have money and live in luxury is incorrect. Perhaps you should do some research on how many white people live in poverty and have a look at the same time at how many black people live in luxury. History shows us that the ruling black people impoverished their own people. This is evident today still when you look at the ‘post-apartheid’ government. And the superiority you accuse the white people of, is also displayed and exerted on others by your own. Why do white people get so defensive whenever this topic is being touched on?? Well…many pieces of your puzzle are missing – you proclaim things as if you are all knowing, but in fact your views are tainted by your own racial bias. And the reason why this country is unable to move forward into an era where all races can live and work together is because of grudges bore against one another…based on what we assume are fact, but are indeed only a verbal re-count of memories we hear people tell. Memories are unreliable because they are not objective and are based on how an individual has experienced them, making the ‘facts’ prejudiced. How many times have you met a person who is able to stand objective and neutral in both his own life and in the life of another, acknowledging the role he/she played themselves in what led to the way things are today? I tell you now that it is impossible. In other words, there are two sides to the South African story…but the world managed to react to or show pity on the one side only wherein the history of the white struggle has been discarded. Corrupt people are found everywhere. This is not encouraged or driven by skin color, but by an individual’s or small group of people’s greed to rule and dominate the rest. How else would you explain the way the black African kings oppressed their own people, or why the ANC government continues to fill their own coffers and impoverish the majority, or why the Brits, French, Portuguese or any other colonizing authority colonized this continent and other parts of the world and enriched themselves through harvesting the colony’s resources? The black people were not the only ones who suffered under this. It seems as if the black people believe that they are, and have managed to play the strings that brought the entire world to believe that they are the only poor oppressed. We are not African because we are not black? This again indicates the ‘superiority’ the black Africans exert on the non-black African’s, and the inability to harmoniously co-exist.

But anyway, let’s humour you and assume you are right. If black Africans have a superiority complex, what do you have? When was the last time you made a conscious effort to “harmoniously co-exist” with someone of another race? When did you last try to learn the language of someone from another race? Do you socialise with folks from other races outside of compulsory situations such as the workplace? What exactly do YOU contribute to achieve what you so aptly refer to as “harmonious coexistence?”

I agree with you that it is a ridiculous notion that some whites think that when Mandela dies, blacks will take up arms and begin the slaughter.
However, the individual who has made comment has a point to, far fetched or far stretched as it may sound. Semantics is not something I like use to rationalize an argument, it seems somewhat necessary however when blacks refer to themselves as those who have the sole rights to Africa. Which part of part of Africa is also a good question. Lets hear any black man tell the Palestinians, Jews, Iranians etc.. that they are not black enough to have any entitlement to their land / countries because it is on the African continent.
The very fact that everyone (& yes, even “Europeans”) originated from Africa, is an argument using semantics but a relevant argument none the less. The fact that many black people think that they are the only ones that originated out of Africa and are therefore the only race who are entitled to claim Africa as theirs and theirs alone is about as ludicrous as whites thinking the slaughter will begin when Mandela dies.
I’m not quiet sure how you can claim that likes of Lobengula being duped, is theft?….. it’s called bartering and if those Chiefs deemed it acceptable who is anyone to dispute that. Just because it is your view point that the barter favored those who arrived on their boats, doesn’t make you right.
Your argument that their is no classification for “white African” is really a nonsensical thing to write. After all classification of race was created by whom? Those whitey’s back in the day did. So, feeling as superior as they did, they classed everyone else and had no need to class themselves and that is why it doesn’t appear anywhere. Does that now mean a white person cannot be African….really now?

Whitey’s did indeed have it “easier” back in the day, however your notion that apartheid was nothing more than a hand out is a delusion that many black people have. A handout is something that is given, like the monetary aid the British have been giving to South Africa for all these years.
White’s weren’t given anything. You didn’t jut get an education, you paid and earned it. You weren’t just given a job because you white, when you got a job, you had to work hard to keep it.
Whites worked to buy property, cars, furniture etc….., it wasn’t given because you were white. Even back in the day, there was unemployment amongst the whites. If the whites were given everything, why was there unemployment (regardless of how low it was)? Whitey’s got fired from jobs….why so if it was an entitlement and was handed out to them? My parents both had full time jobs, yet both of them had to have a second job at night to put a roof over our heads. We weren’t just given a house because we were white. They weren’t earning fat salaries because they were white. There is a big difference between things being easier for some and……a handout.

English speaking white’s were forced to learn to speak Afrikaans. Afrikaans speaking white’s were forced to learn to speak English. If you failed the subject, you failed the standard (grade). We weren’t just given anything, we had to work for it. If you were ill disciplined you were subjected to corporal punishment. Juvenile offenders were even “caned” by the police.
Whites were forced into 2 years military training where we were treated like the scum of the earth. Ever heard of the term “opfok?”…many whitey’s went through that for most of their 2 years and all that while earning nothing more than R80.00 a month. But you know what, you will never hear a whitey bemoaning that today. It taught most of us to work hard for what we want, it taught us discipline and appreciation.

As you mentioned the Soweto uprising, let me too jump on that cart. Yes, the police were forceful and brutal in many aspects and there were those that died unnecessarily. That is a very sad reality to the past. However, people like you seem to ignore other brutal acts and killings and focus on only what suits you. Why?……because it was white on black. Seems rather racist to me. You ignore the fact that many more lives were lost through black on black violence than white on black violence during the apartheid era.

You should look at all the facts and look at both sides of the fence and be a little more objective. Take the time to do a little bit of research. Look up the history of the PAC, the Black Consciousness Movement and take note how their contributions to the struggle have almost been removed from history. A particular party hi-jacked much of their plans and successes and has taken credit for those actions. Propaganda is rife. Open your eyes.

Actually, quite a few people emailed me regarding the “White African” comment. I didn’t realise it’d touch such a nerve. I wonder if black people in Europe feel just as strongly about not being referred to as Black Europeans.

Regarding your comment: “I’m not quiet sure how you can claim that likes of Lobengula being duped, is theft?….. it’s called bartering”. Just because it was “bartering”, doesn’t make it right. Like I said in a previous comment, “the settlers and missionaries came to African shores with a plan. That plan was to annex the land and all its resources. They used tricks, deceit, bibles, arms, and any other means necessary to realise this objective”. To me, that’s a crime. But then again, that’s just my opinion.

To use a slightly related current example: some developed countries like the U.S. subsidise their agricultural sectors which leads to gross over production and consequently a dumping of produce on the market. That obviously has a negative impact on prices which hurts indigenous farmers from the developing world. There’s no law against subsidising your nation’s farmers. But if it leads to a destruction of livelihoods in the developing world, to me, that’s a crime. But then again, that’s just my opinion.

Regarding the idea of hand outs to white people during apartheid, I am merely reflecting the notion that many white people have about black South Africa today. White people believe blacks have it easy in South Africa now. Really? How exactly? And yes, it was way easier for whites back then, certainly easier than it supposedly is for black people today. After all, the apartheid government had but a fraction of the population to take care of.

I like how you bemoaned military service then say you never bemoan military service. But look, I personally like the idea of military service. I wouldn’t mind it being reintroduced. I think many young people the world over would benefit from it…and corporal punishment too. But I think most countries believe in freedom of choice regarding military service and they probably find it somewhat barbaric too.

You say I “ignore the fact that many more lives were lost through black on black violence than white on black violence during the apartheid era”. It’s not a competition and also I’m not ignoring it. I happened to be writing a post on Youth Day so I wrote about…you guessed it, Youth Day. Besides, there are many events that took place in SA’s history. I can’t write about them all, especially considering my blog is a miscellany of random posts, rather than being a strictly political blog.

When I write a post, I have to take into account the majority of people who will read it. And most of those know only of the party that, as you put it, “hi-jacked much of their plans and successes and has taken credit for those actions”. As such, I’m going to write about Mandela ‘cause, as the face of the struggle, that’s who people will know. Those like Bennie Khoapa, Aubrey Mokoape, John Pokela, etc. are, sadly, the forgotten heroes.

But yes, you’re right, propaganda is rife. It always is. I’m sure the apartheid government fed you lots of it too. But hey, what’s life without a little governmental misinformation?

I will not say apartheid didn’t benefit whites, it did, no denying it. Even i, who was 10 in ’94, i benefitted from apartheid. I agree, i will never fight you on that because it is true.

But to condemn the entire white race of South Africa as criminals because we settled here i cannot abide by. I agree we need to address the imbalances of the past. But what are we doing? I don’t mind continuing this discussion. The only reason I wanted to end it was because we were resorting to name calling…which heavily dilutes any rational arguments we may put forward.

Regarding the statement “I know we were dumb enough to have our land and wealth stolen from right under our noses”…this does not imply ALL white people are thieves. It’s simply stating that, in the case of the land issue, a crime was committed. It so happens that the crime was committed by white people against black people.

Now, I know you may be inclined to say it wasn’t so much a crime but a faux pas on the part of the black leaders in charge at the time; after all, it was them that traded away land for useless items. But it’s not as straightforward as that. The settlers and missionaries came to African shores with a plan. That plan was to annex the land and all its resources. They used tricks, deceit, bibles, arms, and any other means necessary to realise this objective.

Look at it this way; if your son came home after an older boy had fooled him into taking a shiny but worthless coin in exchange for his week’s lunch money, would you have a problem with that? And if you told the older boy’s parents or the school principal and they simply highlighted the word “theft” in the dictionary and went on to tell you it was your son’s fault for being dumb enough to give away his week’s lunch money; how would you feel? Would you consider that to be theft?

Is it your fault that you were born into wealth obtained through apartheid? No, it is not. Likewise, it is also not black people’s fault that they were born on the wrong side of the tracks. But I guess a more relevant question is: if you know whites continue to benefit from apartheid today, how do you remedy the situation? Should the SA government have to spend billions buying back land taken by white settlers? Or should they just take it? What’s the right way to do it? Is there a right way to do it?

During the 1979 Lancaster House Agreement which led to the independence of Zimbabwe, the British Government proposed the “willing-buyer, willing-seller” principle that is being utilised to address the land question in SA today. The Patriotic Front led by Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo refused this. Their argument was: the land was taken by British Settlers from its indigenous proprietors. It would thus be a double whammy for the new Zimbabwean government to have to buy that land back. It was consequently agreed that the British Government would instead be the one that compensated the white farmers. Unfortunately, when the labour party came into power in 1997, they reneged on this agreement, which inevitably led to farm invasions. The rest, as they say, is history.

So, how does the SA government do it? Willing-buyer, willing-seller? Make the Dutch government buy the land from the Boers? Invade farms and implement Malema’s “expropriation without compensation” plan? Ignore the land question altogether?

The honest truth is the situation in SA, as in most of the world, isn’t easily resolvable. If we were all robots without feelings, things would be just as easily said as done. But we are humans, we have emotions. This is why in SA, on the whole, whites blame blacks and blacks blame whites, or whites vote DA and blacks vote ANC. If you’re being honest with yourself, how many times have you castigated white corruption in SA versus the amount of times you chastise black corruption? That’s what emotion does. It clouds a lot of logic. Hence some of the emotionally charged borderline racist rhetoric we’ve both contributed to this discussion.

Wow, I feel like I’ve just written a thesis. I should put my fingers in ice before they blister. 🙂

“But I guess a more relevant question is: if you know whites continue to benefit from apartheid today, how do you remedy the situation?”

That’s a good question, the answer is simple. Whites did not only benefit on financial grounds, we also benefitted from the education made available to us. That is why there is still an imbalance. I will only be willing to pay a rock driller a certain amount because he only needs very limited skills and only has very limited skills. Regardless of his race. Now, owing to bantu education and the current governments interpretation of education (which is severely skewed) the person who is often the least educated is a black person.

So, we have loads of people who end up working dead end jobs and crying for a better life. The only way to better their situation is through education. The current government doesn’t want them educated. Nothing is holding blacks back today more than their own leaders. It is unfortunate, it is deplorable, but it is also true.

It is easier to blame all the ills on white folk, and lots of the blame does rest squarely on our shoulders, however the situation could have been well on it’s way to resolved by now had the necessary focus been put on education. It is fine to say economic freedom in our lifetime, but who wants to employ an illiterate with only basic understanding of the times tables into a management position?

The scales are tipped in favour of blacks nowadays, but this is only beiing exploited by a few politically connected elite and as such the man on the street is still just there, on the street.
Allow me to illustrate by means of an example:

If you want a better job, what is the logical way to achieve this?
Hard work, continuous improvement, furthering your studies, kissing the right arses.
Would sitting in your current position and crying get you the promotion? No

That is the world we live in, no one will give you something for nothing and the only way to improve your situation is through improving yourself. The land issue would be non existent if the masses were educated, because they would have the money to buy a property (which is the same way white people acquire their property) not all mind you, as there will always be Gods and Clods.

It seems to me the only approach that would suit the majority of black people is a communist approach where we all share eachother’s misery and everyone starves together. Not workable in my opinion. So if we went to school, instead of burning it down, and got an education things might be better. But that is the hard route, it is easier to sit with outstretched hands and expect houses and jobs without putting in the effort.

If you would like to see what can happen if you do as i have suggested, please have a look at our Indian population (who were also oppressed)

Another way in which land reform and job creation could be tackled would be with the scrapping of a stupid, racist law from 1928 which the government still imposes today. But i will not get into that as it involves dagga, and that usually gets the ad hominems flying.

I understand my ramblings may not be coherent, however, i didn’t edit myself and literally just typed out my thought stream. I apologise if anything comes across as offensive as that is not my intent.

I do strongly believe that one day we will all have a place in the sun in this “rainbow nation” but as long as the priority is, “i demand what the whities have” and not “i want to uplift myself and earn what the whities earn” then i fear we are doomed to fail. All of us, white and black.

On the issue of education, I absolutely agree with you. Wherever you are on this planet, education is crucial and there is a lot that still needs to be done with regards to education in South Africa.

I think the dicey race relations in SA make it very difficult to debate issues regarding the country’s progression. Like I mentioned in my last response, white people are quick to blame black people and black people are quick to blame whites. That’s why, no matter how much good the government does, you will rarely come across any white South Africans acknowledging that good work. Likewise, no matter how much good the DA makes, there are plenty of black people who will never acknowledge that good. And the problem is mainly a lack of introspection. Consider your responses:

You have not once mentioned the refusal of a large section of white South Africans to reform. You naturally gravitate towards pointing the finger at black people and a black government. You say blacks’ priority is “I demand what the whities have” and not “I want to uplift myself and earn what the whities earn” but you don’t talk about the multitudes of black educated people who are trying to uplift themselves but are coming up against doors that some white people refuse to open.

When I say white people need to open the doors to the economy, I’m not saying they need offer black people hand outs. The fact of the matter is white people still own a large chunk of the South African economy. As such, you still have the keys. I’m not asking you to give me a salary for nothing, I’m asking you to give me the opportunity to uplift myself. But it appears the only way that can happen is if white companies are forced by government…hence BBBEE.

But even so, white companies still don’t make it easy. How many white people were employing unqualified black people just to prove BEE doesn’t work? How many were putting shares in their unwitting gardener’s name just to get BEE certification? And yet, every white person I talk to only blames black people and the government for BEE’s failings.

You talk about the corruption of black people in power but there are numerous corrupt white people. Nepotism and fraud is rife in cooperate South Africa i.e. white South Africa. The government has to spend millions in incentives and tax breaks to entice white companies to employ black people. So essentially, the government has to spend money correcting an education system broken by apartheid, then provide bursaries for black students to study at tertiary level because they are from poor backgrounds (for obvious reasons), and then pay a white company to employ that black person.

Last year my colleague’s sister missed out on a job because she didn’t speak Afrikaans. We know this because someone blew the whistle on the company. The job didn’t even require her to speak Afrikaans. She speaks fluent English, Xhosa, Zulu, and Sotho but she’s now actually studying Afrikaans in the evenings. How many white people do you know who’ve had to study a “black language” just to progress in their career? I couldn’t study at Stellenbosch University 11 years ago because their Economics and Management Sciences faculty only offered degrees in Afrikaans. It’s now 2013 and that’s still the case.

When certain concessions are being requested on the part of white people, it isn’t to pass blame. The unfortunate truth is, in order to address past injustices, concessions must be made. It’s for this reason that Affirmative Action is used everywhere in the world; from the Americas, to Europe, all the way to Australasia.

I’ve purposefully apportioned blame to white people to make my point which is:

As long as we possess this blame culture, you will say things like: “It seems to me the only approach that would suit the majority of black people is a communist approach where we all share each other’s misery and everyone starves together”. And in response to that, I will get on the defensive and point the finger at the majority of white people. And together we miss the main point, which is:

The idea is not for everyone to starve but rather for everyone to eat. Naturally there will always be those eating more than others, but no one should be starving.

As black people we need to look at ourselves and as white people you need to look at yourselves and we all need to ask ourselves…

“What must we each do to make South Africa a better place for its entire people?”

We need to introspect on our own lives and contributions to the country and not always point the finger at the other race. Otherwise, like you so aptly put it, “we are doomed to fail. All of us, white and black.”

Hello Marius, good to hear you’re South African and proud of it.

In my opinion, the government is an easy target. Should it be held accountable for its failings? Of course. Every government should. As a citizen, you fully reserve the right to make your government answerable for its shortcomings.

But being the proud South African that you are, when was the last time you said anything positive about your government? When was the last time you acknowledged the positive strides taken by the government since the abolishment of apartheid? Do you know how much good the government has done between 1994 and now? Do you even care or are you only focused on criticising it? And speaking of apartheid, did you hold the apartheid government accountable for the many shortcomings that it had?

And you, what have YOU done to improve the South Africa you are so proud of?

Kyk hier dan sal jy sien julle kan niks met grond maak nie…… Johannesburg – The new draft Expropriation Bill is better, but is still bad, the Free Market Foundation (FMF) said on Wednesday.
“[The bill]… is better than its 2008 predecessor in one key way; it allows the courts, rather than the state, to decide the compensation payable for expropriated property,” SA Institute of Race Relations special research head Anthea Jeffery was quoted as saying by the FMF.
“Although this seems like a major advance, in practice the gain is likely to be negated by other aspects of the bill; in particular, it allows hundreds of organs of state to take ownership and possession of property by simply giving notice to the owner and before any compensation has been paid.”
Jeffery was speaking at an FMF media briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
She said the 2008 Expropriation Bill was clearly unconstitutional and tried to prevent courts from deciding the compensation due.
By contrast, the current bill gave the courts the power to decide on “just and equitable” compensation based on market value.
However, it allowed expropriation to take place before the state had shown that all relevant constitutional requirements had been met.
“It fails to recognise that where expropriated property includes a person’s home, any eviction requires the express authority of the courts. It also allows the state to take ownership and possession before any compensation has been made,” Jeffery said.
“Hence, the option of applying to a court to decide a different measure of compensation is thus likely to benefit only those with deep pockets – the few who, despite the loss of their property to the state, can afford the cost of lengthy litigation with no guarantee of success.”
She said the 2013 bill undermined the right of access to court.
The government claimed the bill was needed to speed up land reform and correct historical injustice. However, 92% of successful land claim beneficiaries had opted for cash rather than the return of their land, said Jeffery.
In addition, between 50% and 90% of land reform projects had failed.
“By its own admission, the government has spent billions in taxpayers’ money to take hundreds of farms out of production, costing thousands of jobs and billions more in lost revenue. Such pointless waste must stop.”
Instead of pushing ahead with the 2013 bill, the government should bring the Expropriation Act of 1975 in line with the Constitution, she said.

Dude, I didn’t want to get involved as obviously this is a sensitive matter, BUT…

I am a WHITE African. No forms in the world says BLACK African either, we are and can always be Africans, no matter what skin colour, culture or religion.

My family tree dates back over 300 years in Africa, no European influence at all. I eat biltong, pap, boerewors, milk tart, and buy my groceries at Checkers, Pick & Pay, and Woolworths. My first language is a native African language, yes, Afrikaans was born in Africa! I love the Parlotones, Johnny Clegg, I jump on minibus taxis and I watch Leanne and (RIP) Vuyo on Morning Live. I go to Natal’s coast for holidays, I love a braai, snoek, beef, any braai. I listen to Jacaranda FM, Highveld, 702, 5FM.

Don’t call me European, I don’t have tulips in my garden and snow during winter, the list goes on and on my friend, I am African and I don’t live a European lifestyle. I am more AFRICAN than a black American who calls himself “African American” although he’s never set foot on our continent. He can’t even speak an African language.

So why should I be called anything less? I am AFRICAN and I love my country and its people, but it’s time to realise that Africans come in all colours, shapes, sizes, religions, cultures. This country belongs to all of us. Not only a selected few. If anything else, this country belongs to the Khoi San, who inhabited it first.

Dude, lay down the weapons, and let’s pray that Madiba has a safe and comfortable journey to the afterlife. Together, as he would want us to.

As u state this is only a conspiracy theory, but unfortunately one that isn’t really that far fetched or hard to believe!

Unfortunately not all black people are the same. While a lot of the older and younger more educated black South Africans are lovely, non racist people, there are still most of uneducated older and younger generation black people who have an incredible hatred for white people, all white people! It’s like they think we controlled what the government decided to do so many years ago in Apartheid times!! It’s sad, because especially the younger white generation don’t see colour. I am 30 and I don’t see colour, except on cases where my Aunty was held up at gun point in her home by 4 black men and threatened with her life for material things after being robbed while not at home 6 times in 6 years. Or when my cousins (2 girls) were hijacked at gun point by 2 black men and left stranded in a sugarcane farm over 100kms from home on their own at ages 18 and 16, with no phone or any way to contact their family. Or when a friend of mind was stabbed 3 times by 3 black men for his phone, wallet and clothes 2 roads down from where I used to live in broad daylight. Or when I had to fight of a young black man with a knife who is trying to mug and stab me…. That is when the racist in me comes out and I’m sure that is the problem with most white South Africans. We feel violated when out friends and family are privy to crimes like the ones I have just mentioned.

Why is it that 99% of all crimes, murders, rapes, thefts etc ate committed by black people. Besides the hate crimes where there r murders for no reasons its because there aren’t enough jobs to accommodate the nation, that’s why. People are poor! And considering the majority of the educated people on South Africa are still white. So it would make perfect sense for a conspiracy theory to exist where the black society (and I mean the uneducaate filled poor black society) would feel they would benefit from eradicating as many white people as possible so there would be more opportunities for all black people.

Look, I’m not saying this “white genocide” is going to happen, and with all my family still in South Africa, I hope like hell it doesn’t.
But If the roles were reversed and taking into account what I have just mentioned and blacks were out numbered 40/1 by white ppl, trust me, there would be the same speculation and fears. It’s only natural to fear what u do not know. Iy only takes one person to make a stupid comment and people start believing it. It’s not like hate crimes and unnecessary murders black on white have decreased over the years.

There is a reason I left South Africa a year and a half ago. To give my children a fair chance to live in a peaceful, fearless society. So that they would b able to walk down to the shop and not worry about being mugged as I was! Yes, there is still crime here but its a ridiculously small percentage in comparison with South Afri
If only everyone in South Africa could put aside their anger, racist comments and accusations perhaps the country would be in better shape. If ALL South Africans, black and white, could alter their “all for me and none for all” attitudes maybe the country as a whole could move forward. That would make South Africa a strong united nation. Until then, unfortunately South Africa will remain shattered and broken, and a place people run away from to get peace of mind!

I love my country and I will always be a South African regardless if what passport I have. I will NEVER live there again tho, not until there is peace!

It’s a pity Madiba was so old before he got his chance to run our country. He had many great plans but ran out of time. He may be a terrorist in the eyes of some people but he only became one because he was forced into it by the Boer government. He was and will always be a great man who is an inspiration to so many. He could have come out of prison with anger and hatred for how he had been treated but he didn’t. I just hope the ANC follows in his peaceful leadership. Nelson Mandela, will live in out hearts forever xox

Hi Melissa, sorry to hear all that. Sadly crime is a reality in many a part of the world. Whilst your examples may paint a racially charged crime pattern in South Africa, that’s not necessarily the case. For every white person who has been a victim of crime at the hands of black people, I can show you at least three black people who’ve been a victim of crime at the hands of black people. Like you said, it’s mostly to do with poverty and a lack of opportunities. Unfortunately, black people are the ones overwhelmingly mired in poverty. But yes, no one really knows what the future holds for South Africans, Africans, or the world at large. We can but wait, hope, and live.

Yes you are stupid if you think you are better than someone else and deserve more. Stop this vicious cycle of hate and forgive people. You may actually find yourself enjoying each others company.

did you know that in the 90s after mandela was released from prison (terrorism, life sentence), scores of White South Afrikaners fled to Silicon Valley, CA, since the mandela (communist ANC) regime was immediately exacting revenge upon them by stealing their intellectual property (medical devices, auto technology, .mil armaments, etc.) like any other communist dictatorship: Soviet Union, China or even nazi germany.

Nelson Mandela’s transformation ‘from terrorist to icon’

    By Agence France-Presse
    Thursday, December 5, 2013 14:57 EST

“You can’t get out of jail as a terrorist, but you can get out of prison as a black leader,” he told AFP during a visit to Johannesburg. So revered is Nelson Mandela today that it is easy to forget that for decades he was considered a terrorist by many foreign governments, and some of his current supporters.

The anti-apartheid hero was on a US terror watch list until 2008 and while still on Robben Island, Britain’s late “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher described his African National Congress as a “typical terrorist organisation.”

I started reading this blog and got to the part where someone said “thank you” for aids. Seriously??? I am a white south african and just have to comments on this. It is sad to know that there are people thinking in this manner. We were all created by one God and this throwing stones will definately not solve any problems we face dailky. This is were it all start – people accusing one another for things that happened way before we were even born. I am sure we all have the same wishes – to life in a safe and secure environment. There is a lot of wrongs that need to be fixed but one telling the other how bad they are will surely not help anybody. I have been brought up to respect other people and at the end of the day I think we all were raised the same – whether we are white, black, coloured, indian, etc. We in turn teach our children the same values – at the end of the day, that is what’s most important. Respect for each other. God filled our hearts with Love NOT hatred.
